SUMMARY:The U.S. Supreme Court\, the 14th Amendment and Social Justice: Rethinking the Court's Role in 2023
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Supreme Court\, the 14th Amendment and Social Justice: Rethinking the Court’s Role in 2023 \nProfessor Marny Requa \nDate: Tuesday\, December 5\, 3 pm to 4:15 pm \nThe Little Theater \nCohosted by the Department of CJ\, Anthropology\, Sociology & Human Rights\, the Social Justice Committee\, and the Office of Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion. \nThis talk covers recent high-profile Supreme Court cases on affirmative action and abortion law\, exploring the role of the Court in the US government and its impact on racial\, gender\, and economic justice issues. The talk considers the far-reaching influence of the Court and the dynamic relationship between law and social justice. The audience is encouraged to view law as a social artifact as we consider what these decisions tell us about the current US Supreme Court as well as consequences for advocacy efforts\, instigating a shift away from strategic litigation to grassroots organizing and state initiatives on several social justice issues.
